Social media poses a challenge for many business owners. Being noticed amid a sea of Tweets and other posts is hard these days, so here are 5 ways we've found to help increase your social media engagement.
1. Start a Conversation
Direct engagement with leaders in your industry, businesses you admire, and especially with your customers is one of the cornerstones of good social media engagement and can really help your staying power. Having an honest conversation helps people think positively of you, and increases your network.
While this takes some dedication on your part to check in to your social accounts frequently and make the effort to start and maintain conversations, the benefits will pay out immensely in the long run. Search relevant hashtags to your industry, follow industry leaders, and get involved in what’s being talked about.
2. Post Relevant Content
Not everything you do has to be promotional. In fact, it's better for you and your business if it isn't. Posting or reposting content that has a lot to do with your business, current direction, or current project is a great way to keep people interested in what you're doing even when you aren't offering them something new to buy. It will also build trust that you’re not simply shoving product in their face, and when you do finally make a personal post prompting them to buy, they’ll be far more likely to do so.
3. A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words
Social media is a very visual medium overall and including a photo or video with a post helps it grab customers' attention as they scroll through their newsfeed or timeline. Images provide a quick, emotional connection to your viewers and it's best to use quality ones wherever possible and are statistically get more engagement than posts with no image. So don’t hold back!
4. Sharing is Caring
Sharing some of the articles written or otherwise noticed by some of the big names in your industry, especially if you can provide a response or your own commentary in it, can help boost your credibility and connect you with a larger network of people. If you do this often enough, you’d be surprised at how often unlikely connections can be made.
5. Calling all Customers
Including a well-phrased call to action in your posts is a great way to get your audience to engage with you. Ask them a question they can answer in the comments or with an '@' mention. Send them to a link or ask them for feedback on a new idea. When you make it clear what you need from your audience, they're more likely to act on it without any probing or reminders.
Simply posting bland updates or promotions isn't enough to make you stand out from the hundreds of other people still doing the same thing. If you want to make social media work the best way possible for you and your business, then engagement must be front and center. Take time to communicate with your social media audience the right way and you're sure to see a positive impact on you business.
